Geodes are geological rock formations that occur in certain volcanic rocks. they are essentially rock cavities with internal crystal formations or concentric banding. The exterior of the most common geodes is generally limestone or a related rock, while the interior contains quartz or amethyst crystals. there is no easy way of telling what the inside of a geode holds until it is cut open jor broken apart.

Geodes can form in any cavitity that is buried-a natural bubble of gas, an animals home or a lava vesicle. A vesicle is a small spherical cavity in the rock, formed by the expansion of a gas before the lava solidfied. Over time, the external wall of the cavity hardens and dissolved silicates or carbonates are deposited on the inner surface. Gradually, this feed of mineral constituents from groundwater or hydrothermal solutions allows crystals to form inside the hollow chamber.

The size of the crystals formed inside the rock cavities varies, and so does their form and colour. Therefore, like any natural formation, each geode is unique. Some geodes are clear as quartz crystals, and others have rich purple amethyst crystals (such as the ones we have). Others may have agate, chalcedony or jasper crystals. Geodes are common in some formations in the Uniteed States and also in Brazil, Namibia and Mexico.
